Update Review of the Relationship Between Gut Microbiota and Neurodegenerative Diseases

  • Neurodegenerative disease is characterized by progressive deterioration of function or structure of nerve cells in central nervous system, mainly manifested as declined cognitive function and impaired motor behavior. Its morbidity and mortality continue to increase with age, and cause a heavy economic and social burden. Gut microbiota is proved to influence behavior through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, and possess tight relationship with neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Although several studies have assessed the crucial role of gut microbiota in neurodegenerative disease and summarized some potential mechanisms, the more systematic and comprehensive knowledge in this field still need to be updated timely to boost interventions in neurodegenerative disease based on gut microbiota. For this purpose, we firstly analyzed how the gut microbiota changed in the state of neurodegenerative diseases. Then, we investigated the influence of gut microbiota on the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. Finally, we proposed effective interventions for managing neurodegenerative disease from the perspective of gut microbiota. This updated review provides effective intervention strategies for neurodegenerative disease based on microbiota-gut-brain axis.
